Nestaire is an Australia-based online store that offers a wide range of products. We’re known for our handcrafted copper items and our customers just can’t get enough of them.

Whether you want a copper water bottle or are planning to switch to a copper water dispenser; we’ve got you covered. But with copper comes questions. Yes, we come across many questions on a daily basis and are more than happy to answer them.

We’ve already dedicated a blog for some of the most common questions and this is our second edition. Here, we will answer questions related to taking care of and maintaining your copper bottles, dispensers, and mugs. So, without any further ado, let’s jump into the questions.

Question 1: Am I using my copper bottle right?

Answer:  This question generally pops up after someone buys a copper water bottle from our store. It’s okay if you’re not sure how to use it, we’re here to guide you. Follow these tips:

  • When you receive your Nestaire copper bottle, make sure you wash it water first.
  • Then, fill it up with room temperature water and close the cap/lid. Let it rest for 6-8 hours and then proceed to drink it.

If you’re not the waiting types, here’s a pro tip for you:

  • Fill up your copper bottle with water just before going to the bed. This way, when you wake up, you will be able to have it first thing in the morning.

Experts at NDTV suggest if you drink copper water before consuming anything else in the morning, it balances your Ayurvedic doshas.

Question 2: My copper bottle has started getting black from the inside. What do I do?

Answer: This happens with a lot of people using copper bottles or copper mugs for the first time. There’s nothing to worry about.

The bottle starts getting black due to oxidation (when you store water in it overnight). This is a positive sign because that indicates that the bottle you have purchased is pure copper.

The decoloration of the bottle or any other copper product you have will go away once you wash it. Please refer to our “Safety and Care” page to learn about the copperware cleaning/washing process.

Question 3: Can I store milk or juice in my copper bottle?

Answer: No, copper is only meant for storing water and nothing else. Other forms of liquid such as milk or juice aren’t a good fit for it.

These food types are of acidic forms, one having citric acid and the other having lactic acid. The acids react with the copper bottle in a negative way and may affect your health. (You can look it up online, you’ll find detailed explanations on the same)

NOTE: Nestaire does not recommend customers use copper water, mugs, or dispensers for storing anything other than water.

Question 4: What will happen if I pour hot water into my copper bottle?

Answer: Don’t do that.

Copper bottles clean water with oxidization. But pouring hot water into the bottle disturbs this process. Copper absorbs the heat, making it difficult for you to carry or even gold the bottle in your hand.

You can use lukewarm water to fill up your copper water dispenser or bottle avoid using boiling/hot water.

Question 5: Can I wash my copper bottle and mugs using a detergent?

Answer: We do not advise this. Copper is natural and using detergent or any other form of soap can reduce its durability.

We suggest you go for homemade pastes to wash your bottles. All you need is lime and a little bit of salt.

There are many other ways of cleaning it and all of them are natural.

It’s because of them that we’re able to offer a line up this beautiful. Go check our tableware range if you haven’t.

Question 7: Which Copper Bottle is Better – Plain, Hammered, or the Printed One?

Answer: You can choose any copper water bottle you like. All the bottles look super stylish in your hand. They’re sure to grab attention if you carry them at work or anywhere else.

We’re all aware of the benefits of using hammered copper mugs, jugs, and vessels. They’re known for protecting us from harmful diseases but are also infamous for turning black after some time.

If it bothers you too and you’re looking for a solution to prevent them from turning black, this blog is for you. We’re going to list down a few effective yet easy ways to maintain the quality and shine of your favorite copper products.

Tips for Cleaning Hammered Copper Mugs

  1. Lemon Works like a Charm

Lemons are easily available in the market whether you shop online or prefer buying them from a physical store. You can use it in two different ways such as:

  • Rubbing its slices on the utensil and washing it off with clean water
  • Making a paste by squeezing lemon and salt, applying it to the mugs, and cleaning it off with lukewarm water.

  1. Vinegar Helps

Just like lemon, white vinegar too can be used in more than one way to clean your hammered copper mugs. It is in fact, a great alternative to lemons. You can:

  • Use simple white vinegar to wash off the copper utensils.
  • Mix vinegar with salt, and use the stirred mixture to apply on copper. Then, rub it properly until the thickness of the solution goes away.
  • You can either use only the two ingredients mentioned above or add a little bit of flour to the combination to create a paste. Apply it to the copper-based product and leave it untouched for about 15 minutes. Then rub off the paste and rinse with warm water.

  1. Baking Soda + Salt = Useful

A baking soda and salt solution can also work wonders when cleaning copper-based mugs, bottles, jugs, or vessels. The mixture helps bring back the original shine of the product. If you want, you can use only baking soda and you’d surely notice that shine coming back after a single wash.

While cleaning just remember not to use a steel scrubber. It can spoil the utensil and make it look worse.

  1. Soap Water Does the Job Too

Sometimes, we underestimate the greatness of soapy water. Yes, your copper mugs or bottles can restore the same shine even with soap water. Just soak it in the soapy water overnight and in the morning clean it properly.

  1. Make a Copper Polish at Home

Making a copper polish may sound a bit complicated but it isn’t. First things first, you need detergent powder, flour, and salt in a bow. After that, you require adding white vinegar, water, and squeeze lemons into the mix. Stir it well and then pour only a little bit of it into the utensil scrub pad or sponge. Then, rub it gently on the black-looking portions of the copper product you own. Now, use water and rinse off the polish. Don’t forget to dry it using a soft cloth.

If it works for you, we suggest making a large quantity of the polish and storing it for future use. It will help you save time as you won’t have to make the polish every time you wash your copper utensils.

  1. Tamarind works Perfectly

Here’s a surprise addition to our list of copper washing tips. But it is in fact, a very effective way to recover a product’s shine, given you use it in cooked or baked form.

  • You require soaking tamarind in water (a cup or bowl) for at least 30 minutes.
  • Once they are strat melting, use a spoon or mash the tamarinds with your hands in the water.
  • After mashing it thoroughly, apply this water to the affected copper product you wish to wash. You have to wash it like you wash your utensils normally, it’s just that instead of normal water, you are now using tamarind water.
  • Don’t leave out any black or dirty and rub it nicely.
  • We suggest applying tamarind pulp (wet) to the utensils for better results.

  1. Ketchup Doesn’t Disappoint

Another surprising yet powerful way to clean copper utensils of all kinds, whether big or small. It contains a certain amount of acidity that helps to eliminate those ugly copper stains. It doesn’t matter which brand of ketchup you use, just spread it on the mug or jug and let it sit for a few minutes. Giving it some time allows the acidity to do its magic. After that, scrub it away using a sponge or pad. Rinse it and use an olive-oil-soaked cloth to rub it. Finally, let it dry for a while and then check. You will be amazed by what you see, just try the tomato ketchup hack!
